Identification

  • Physical description:
    • Adults are about 15mm long and light brown with a distinctive light brown band across their back.
    • Nymphs (young cockroaches) are smaller and lack the brown band.
  • Habitat:
    • Prefer warm, humid environments.
    • Found in homes and buildings, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and behind appliances.
  • Feeding habits:
    • Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of materials including:
      • Food scraps and crumbs
      • Starchy and sugary foods
      • Grease and oils
      • Dead insects
      • Non-food items like glue, paper, and fabrics

Behaviour

  • Life cycle:
    • Females lay egg capsules containing 10-30 eggs.
    • Nymphs develop through several moults before reaching adulthood.
    • The entire life cycle takes about 2-3 months.
  • Activity patterns:
    • Primarily nocturnal, but can be active during the day, especially in heavily infested areas.

Signs of Infestation

  • Visual signs:
    • Live or dead cockroaches
    • Fecal matter: small, black specks or smears, often found near harborage areas.
    • Yellowish egg capsules, about 3mm long, often hidden in cracks and crevices.
    • Shed skins of nymphs.
  • Behavioural signs:
    • Musty odor, particularly in heavily infested areas.

Health Risks

  • Potential health hazards:
    • Can carry and spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause various illnesses, including:
      • Salmonella and E. coli
      • Food poisoning
      • Dysentery
      • Trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children.
  • Brown-banded cockroaches can hitchhike into homes on infested items like groceries, furniture, or boxes.
  • They are considered a nuisance pest and a potential health concern due to their ability to contaminate food and surfaces.
