The flat grain beetle is a tiny but persistent pest of stored grains and food products in Sri Lanka.

Identification

  • Physical description: Small, reddish-brown beetle (1.5 to 2.0 mm long) with a flattened body and long, bead-like antennae. Adults have a ridge on their head and thorax.
  • Habitat: Primarily found in stored grains like wheat, rice, corn, and other cereals. They can also infest nuts, beans, dried fruits, and processed food items. They thrive in warm, humid environments.
  • Feeding habits: Adults and larvae feed on the germ and endosperm of grains, causing reduced nutritional value and weight loss.

Behaviour

  • Life cycle: Complete metamorphosis with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The life cycle can take as little as a month under ideal conditions, allowing for rapid population growth.
  • Activity patterns: Mainly active at night but can be active during the day, especially in heavily infested areas.

Signs of Infestation

  • Visual signs: Presence of adult beetles in stored food products. Look for frass (insect droppings) resembling fine flour dust, and damaged or chewed food packaging.
  • Behavioral signs: Heating in stored grains due to insect activity, webbing produced by larvae, and a musty odor from infested products.

Control Methods

  • Preventative measures: Practice good sanitation, store food products in airtight containers, and maintain proper ventilation in storage areas to reduce humidity. Regularly inspect stored grains for signs of infestation.
  • Monitoring: Use pheromone traps to monitor for flat grain beetle activity and detect infestations early.
  • Insecticides: In severe cases, a licensed pest control professional can apply insecticides labeled for use in stored food products. (Note: Always follow product instructions carefully and prioritize non-chemical methods whenever possible.)
  • Fumigation: For large-scale infestations, fumigation can be a viable option, but consult with a professional to ensure the safety of stored food products.
