German Cockroach

Identification

  • Physical description:
      • Brownish-yellow in colour, 13-16 mm long.
      • Flattened body with two long antennae.
      • Two dark stripes running down the back of the thorax.
  • Nymphs (young cockroaches) are smaller and wingless,

  • Habitat:
      • Prefer warm, humid environments.
      • Found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other areas with food and water sources.
      • Often hide behind appliances, under cabinets, and in cracks and crevices.

    • Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of food sources including:
      • Crumbs, food debris, and garbage.
      • Pet food.
      • Dead insects and other organic matter.

Behaviour

  • Life cycle:
    • Females lay egg capsules (oothecae) containing 30-40 eggs.
    • Nymphs hatch and go through several molts before reaching adulthood.
    • The entire life cycle takes about 60-100 days.
  • Activity patterns:
    • Primarily nocturnal, coming out at night to forage for food and water.
    • May be seen during the day if the infestation is severe.

Signs of Infestation

  • Visual signs:
    • Seeing live cockroaches, especially at night.
    • Finding dead cockroaches.
    • Observing dark droppings resembling coffee grounds or black pepper.
    • Egg capsules (oothecae) in hidden areas.
    • Smear marks left by cockroaches on surfaces.

    • Musty or oily odour, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.
    • Food and utensils appear greasy or contaminated.
