Saw-Toothed Grain Beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis)

The saw-toothed grain beetle is a major headache for anyone storing grains and other dry food products in Sri Lanka.

Identification

  • Physical description: Small, slender, reddish-brown beetle (2.5-3.5 mm long) with distinctive saw-toothed projections along the edges of its thorax.
  • Habitat: Found in stored food products like grains, cereals, flour, nuts, dried fruits, and pet food. They thrive in warm, dry environments with access to food sources.
  • Feeding habits: Feed on a wide variety of dry, starchy foods. Adults can chew through packaging to reach food sources. Larvae burrow into kernels and seeds.

Behaviour

  • Life cycle: Complete metamorphosis with four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The entire life cycle can take as little time as a month under ideal conditions, allowing for rapid population growth.
  • Activity patterns: Primarily active at night, but can be active during the day if disturbed.

Signs of Infestation

  • Visual signs: Presence of adult beetles in stored food products. Look for frass (insect droppings) resembling fine powder, shed skins, and damaged food packaging with small holes.
  • Behavioral signs: Flour or grain dust around containers, webbing produced by larvae, and a musty odor from infested products.

Control Methods

  • Prevention: Practice good sanitation by storing food products in airtight containers, regularly cleaning storage areas, and maintaining a cool, dry environment.
  • Monitoring: Use pheromone traps to monitor for infestations and detect them early.
  • Treatment: For established infestations, consider various methods:
    • Insecticides: Apply approved insecticides as sprays or dusts, following label instructions carefully.
    • Diatomaceous earth: This natural powder can dehydrate and kill adult beetles.
    • Fumigation: For severe infestations, especially in large storage facilities, fumigation by a licensed professional can be highly effective.

Additional Information

Remember: Always prioritize safe food handling practices when using insecticides or other pest control methods around food products.
